Tim Holtz Style Tags for Valentine's Day

For those of you familiar with the Tim Holtz 12 Tags of Christmas, you are going to LOVE the way that Linda Ledbetter use his techniques to make her 12 Tags of Valentine's Day. What a nifty idea to use the same concept for different holidays.

Given it's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I think I'll make a set of tags using Tim Holtz's techniques focusing on this holiday using Dr. King's quotes and images.

The CHA Trade Show and CHA SuperShow & World Record Attempt Crop for charity starts later this week, so I'll get working on it when I return...can't wait!

Checking In and Catching Up Before CHA

So much has been happening, it's sometimes hard for me to keep up. But here I am. Ready to fill you in on what's been going on in my little world of creating and writing about paper crafting.

GASC Kicked Off Today!

The fun kicked off today in Arlington, TX at the Great American Scrapbook Convention (GASC).

Gosh, I wish I could go. They have a 3-day convention in TX and we only have 2 days in VA. But I'll take them!

I am REALLY looking forward to attending GASC in Chantilly this year.

Currently, I am scheduling interviews with a few of the Memory Makers Masters that are teaching this year at GASC. So, stay tuned for more on that front.

Scrapbooker Gets Private Concert from American Idol Bo Bice

I know it's April Fools Day, but I swear this is not a joke -- it really happened! American Idol Bo Bice performed a private concert for scrapbooker, Lecia Ross, from Columbia, MD.

In the article, "No foolin American Idol Bo Bice concert for scrapbooker," I was not able to extend a very special thank you to Lecia for sharing her story with me and allowing me to share it with others -- THANK YOU! And I want to extend a warm thank you to "Queen Mary" for passing along Lecia's story to me. Thank you both for helping me share, yet another experience where scrapbooking brings people together.

Afterall, if not for the crop that Mary and I attended, I would not have known about Lecia's wonderful dream come true experience. If you're looking for some upcoming weekend crops I listed a some here.

Cute Chocolate Scented Card

This morning I posted the instructions for how to make this chocolate scented card on my DC Paper Craft Examiner page.

I posted it in honor of Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day. I don't know why, but even though I do not like chocolate, I think "Forget Love I'd Rather Fall in Chocolate" would make a most excellent country music song!

They don't teach many classes and you won't want to miss the opportunity to learn this incredible stamping process from the masters (more info and pictures can be viewed here).

Tim Holtz - Grunge Kind of Day

Sometimes I feel like completely drawing outside of the lines. And that's exactly how I felt when I created this T im Holtz, grunge inspired card and altered coaster (Outback -- a paper crafters dream).

Although, it's not my typical style, but it was fun to work with grunge board, paint daubers, metal findings, distress inks, stickles, stamps, ink, embossing powder, alcohol inks, twinkling H2os, glossy accents, and of course the old time dynamo label maker.

It's important to step outside of your comfort zone now and again to discover new techniques and different ways of using your products. And it is also a great way to play with and learn about new products. You may not always be happy with the results, but at least you tried, and hopefully learned something along the way.

I'm not sure if I'll be making a lot of cards this way, but I do know that I will be using many of the elements and techniques to create cool things for other projects.

All stamps used in creating the card and altered coaster were from the Tim Holtz stamp collection.

Camp Crop-A-Lot

All who attend Camp Crop-A-Lot get warm and fuzzy all over when they see the the Camp Tomahawk sign welcoming them to another fun-filled weekend of cropping and fellowshipping. This weekend was the 9th annual Camp Crop-A-Lot event and it's hard to believe that they continue to find new ways to make it better and better each year!

It's always so nice to see dear friends and meet new ones each year. We were so blessed that Major Annette Dodd invited the founder of Camp Crop-A-Lot, Marion Durham, join us from sunny Panama City, Florida.

Each year the Salv ation Army's Maryland & West Virgina Women's Ministries transforms Camp Tomahawk into Camp-Crop-A-Lot to provide an opportunity for women to go for an entire weekend of scrabooking , classes, games, massages, workshops, and fellowship. This year we were allowed to arrive and start cropping on Thursday and the crop room stayed open until Sunday at 4:00 p.m. As always, the food was wonderful, the prizes plentiful, and the friendship abundant.

Some friends you only see once per year during this very special weekend, but you pick up as if you had never been apart. The women of the Salvation Army have really created something special, and not easily duplicated, here!

I was very excited to teach two classes this year at Camp Crop-A-Lot! We covered some techniques that were new to many of the women taking the classes, but they all mastered them and did a fabulous job putting together the albums and truly making them their own.

In the coming weeks, I'll be writing a DC Paper Craft Examiner article about this wonderful annual event that the Salvation Army has created, which will include information about Camp Tomahawk's summer camp program for children and how to donate, as well as a link to their new ministry crop website when it launches.

The more I use the Cuttlebug embossing templates, the more I love them! They really add punch to a flat piece of paper.

This card was so easy to make and only took me a few minutes. If you want to know the products used, I listed step-by-step instructions on my DC Paper Craft Examiner page.

Baby Boy Embossed Card

I was supposed to be cutting paper for kits for the Once Upon A Time acrylic album and Beautiful Family word book album that I'll be teaching at Camp Crop A Lot this upcoming weekend in Hedgesville, WV, but instead I felt inspired to make this cute baby boy card.

It's hard to see the embossing, but the hearts, frog, and "baby boy" are heart embossed using the Cloud 9 Design Baby clear stamp set, Versamark, and Stampendous - Stamp 'n Stuff cobalt blue embossing powder. The papers used are Bazzill cardstock and Baby Boy by Cloud 9 Design (Bouncing Baby Boy, Chitchat, and Ribbet, Ribbet). The stamp set and paper are all from the Cloud 9 Design Baby Boy Collection. The paper was inked with Tim Holtz Distress Ink - Faded Jeans.

Just wanted to share this simple design, which can be adapted to suit any occasion.

Crops Plus...a whole lot more!

If you weren't at Crops Plus this past weekend, you should have been! The fun started on Friday morning and lasted until Sunday afternoon. Deej and Sarah really know how to put on a crop that makes you feel like "It's All About You!"

I enjoy going to crops to see old friends and to make new ones. The vendors were wonderful, the classes that they taught were great, and the products that they sold were perfect -- whether you were scrapbooking, stamping, or digital scrapbooking -- they had something for everyone.

This was Crops Plus first time in their new location at the Holiday In n Dulles in Sterling, VA and it was spectacular! The crop room was spacious and well lit. Meals were served in the hotel restaurant and they were delicious and bountiful. Everyone was so nice...I didn't want to leave.

Crops Plus next crop is May 16 & 17. The events sell out quickly, so be sure to sign up soon! Be sure to check out the Crops Plus Clubhouse member benefits before you register because "membership has it's benefits."

Que Sera Sera

I wish I were going to Paris for the weekend, but alas I am not. Don't feel sad for me because I am still going somewhere FUN this weekend -- CROPS PLUS! It starts today and ends at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

So here's what's in store for me and my fellow croppers at Crops Plus this weekend:

Giveaways

Every Attendee receives Thank You Gifts with a retail value of over $20. These gifts are products from the latest lines of scrapbooking, not last year's clearance leftovers. I can attest to this -- Sarah and Deej are very generous!

Bookwormabella Bookmark

It was my turn to host Book Club and I thought it would be fun to give out bookmarks to each of the ladies. The bookmark that I created is wider than most, but I REALLY wanted to use the Bookwormabella stamp that I bought at Angela's Happy Stamper.

The paper that I used was vanilla colored and very bland, so I cut a couple of pieces from a Cut-n-Dry Foam Pad and inked them with Memories Dye Ink in Mango and Crimson. Then I placed the card on a Non-stick Craft Sheet and rubbed the ink onto the card, working from the outside-in, in a swirling motion, starting with the lighter color.

The Bella stamp image was embossed using Versamark Dazzle - Champagne and Stampendous Pearlustre Garnet Opaque embossing powder.

"Once upon a time" was embossed using the same technique. The stamp is part of an acrylic stamp sheet by Junkitz. Unfortunately, I do not have a link to share as that company went out of business.

Be sure to check out Stamping Bella stamps. They are unmounted rubber stamps with a precision cut images. Easy to use and store. And oh so cute!

Although the crop is sold out, you can still take classes even if you are not attending the crop and if you're interested you can get on the waiting list to attend the crop. Crops Plus puts on a fabulous crop with wonderful vendors! Even if you decide not to take a class it's still worth it to go to check out the crop and support the local vendors.

Make Your Friend A Serenity Tea Tin

It's so nice to see the look on friend's faces when I give them a little "serenity in a box" to calm them on a busy day! This was fun and easy to make. I used tins from Papertrey Inks (but you can also use an Altoids Tins).

I inked the outside of the tin using Adirondack® Alcohol Inks. Click here to see a video of Tim Holtz demonstrating how to use this wonderful product.

The fabulous stamp set that I used on both the inside and the outside of the tin is called Serenity Now by My Favorite Things...Just Delightful Clear Stamps!

To color in the image, I used Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils and then applied Gamsol (an artist grade mineral spirits -- can be used as a blending medium for colored pencils) to soften the colors. Inky Antics has a free step-by-step tutorial that you can download on their website.

I love going to crops! I enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new ones. There’s always so much to learn from others and so much to share. Crops are a great way to have uninterrupted time to work on your albums, cards, invitations, stamping projects, etc. No phones to answer, no meals to make, and no chores to do…just time spent away from home doing something that you love with people that love doing the same things.

Many crops offer make-and-takes, vendors, classes, and massages at reasonable rates. And how often do you go somewhere and they give you a goodie bag and the opportunity to win prizes?!

Remember, if you leave a crop and didn’t learn a new technique, about a new product, about a great place to shop for supplies, etc., then you need to get up from your table and walk around a little bit more the next time you crop. Scrapbookers and Rubberstampers are usually more than happy to show you what they’re working on and want to share their ideas and techniques.

Layout for Springtime

I know it's been a while since my last post, but I'll explain in a minute. First I want to show you this springtime layout. I created this 12" x 12" layout for a Cricut 101 Class called Blossoms & Blooms that I will be teaching at JoAnn's in April. This layout was made using Accent Essentials and Opposites Attract Cricut Cartridges. I really liked the way the glitter pink paper provided texture to the layout. By the way, Hallmark Scrapbook has the Opposites Attract cartridge on sale for only $29.99 on their website.

What a fun time I had decorating this Hello Kitty Purse and Flower Tote Bag! The tote bag also has a girl's name spelled out in felt across the back. I created these as examples of the types of items that can be altered for little girl birthday parties that are offered at JoAnn's in Leesburg. I used Mod Podge Glitter on the purse to add a little extra sparkle to the finish. The felt flowers on the tote were cut using flower die cuts on my Sizzix Big Kick machine.

After spending January 31st paper crafting and working on my Creating Keepsakes Project 365 Kit, my thumb was really hurting and very swollen. I knew it would take time to a little time to heal, after being able to finally take off that wrist & thumb brace, but the pain was excruciating. So I decided I should limit my crafting until I saw the orthopedic doctor again. Well, it was good that I did that!

It turns out that hidden beneath the swelling from the torn cartilage was a fracture. The previous x-rays did not show it because of all of the swelling from the torn cartilage. The doctor said it will take a few months to heal. The good news is that the new brace I have to wear for the next four weeks allows me more mobility than the last one. So, I'll still be crafting -- everyday if I have my way!

Back in the Saddle!

It is so nice to be back in the saddle, again! Yesterday, I created three scrapbooks to use as samples for Kid's Classes, Kid's Camp, and Kid's Birthday Parties at Jo-Ann's. I do not have any little girls of my own, but I know that the birthday parties at Jo-Ann's seem to be attended mostly by girls. So, in order to get in the "little girl" frame of mind for creating, I used daughters of a couple of friends as my muses. And in hopes of having some boys in Kid's Camp during spring break, I created a scrapbook using my son as my muse (remembering way back to when he was shorter than me).

For this Butterfly Girl scrapbook class/party sample, my dear friend's daughter Amani was my muse. One time at a crop her mother was creating a page layout that included Amani's face painted like a butterfly. I loved the picture, the smile on her face, and the layout that my friend created.

For this Soccer scrapbook class/party sample, my son, Cameron, was my muse:

For this Tinkerbell scrapbook class/party sample, my dear friend's daughter Caroline was my muse. When last I saw Caroline , she was teaching me the name of all of Tink's fairy friends! I included a few pictures of the inside pages and the back page.

I think little girls would love making this scrapbook at a birthday party!

Of course, there are some techniques and embellishments that I would add if an adult were making this scrapbook. But I created this scrapbook keeping in mind that I wanted it to be easy for a child to put together.

Remember: "A little fairy dust goes a long way!" Brrnnng!

Cricut Tote

Monday night I taught a Cricut Class at Jo-Ann’s to a wonderful group of ladies. At the end of class, one of the ladies asked me where I bought the bag for my Cricut Expression. I bought it from a vendor at a Crops Plus crop last year. But you can purchase one here or here.

I love this bag! It will fit any Cricut machine, expanding to 8" x 22" x 9". You can use it for transportation or storage – it’s tough nylon and liner provide protection. It includes extra pockets for storage, removable shoulder strap, and handles. And I must add that it is surprisingly lightweight. For those of you that don’t want to carry your Cricut Expression, but still want to take it with you to a crop of a friend’s house, there are rolling totes available in a variety of colors on Amazon.

Today is the second day of that school is closed due to snow. So, I think I’ll take a “Snow Day,” too and head down to my creative workshop and clean it up so I can be ready to start crafting again when I take this brace off tomorrow.

This is the layout is for January's Cricut Class at Jo-Ann's. This class is designed to give students an introduction to the Cricut Expression machine. Students will learn about the many different functions available on the Cricut and how to complete this simple project using those functions.

This class is available during the month of January at all Jo-Ann stores across the nation that offer classes. I will be teaching this class at the Jo-Ann store in Leesburg on Monday, January 26, at 6:30 p.m. If you are in the area and interested in learning about the incredible Cricut machine, please call or go into the store to register for this class.

I will also be demonstrating the Cricut Expression and Cuttlebug machines in the store on Jan. 24, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Come in and say "hello" if you're in the area!

I hope you and your loved ones are doing well. I received a lot of emails asking me why I had not published a blog entry in so long. Well, here's the reason:

I tripped over my darling husband's cane (he had hip replacement surgery right before Thanksgiving). Needless to say, I managed to severely sprain two joints and tear a cartilage in my left thumb. This happened on December 13th...I'll be wearing this brace until January 29th, but I won't let that stop me. It's already feeling so much better.

So, I plan to get back to creating a little something everyday. Below is an easy card that I created using the Beyond Birthday cartridge with my Cricut Expression. I will be teaching a Cricut Class at Jo-Ann's on January 26th. It's a winter page layout that I will post a picture of it with more details tomorrow.

When one of my dearest friends, Ameena, first told me about the Cricut Beyond Birthdays cartridge I will admit that I bought it, but just did not think it would be something that I would really use. However, when I needed to produce a stack of birthday cards for Angels2TheHeart recipients and angels, and my hand was really hurting -- it saved me (thanks, Ameena)!

I used preprinted cards from a boxed set that came with envelopes, then printed out the "happy birthday" with a frame and mounted it on bazzill cardstock and used foam adhesive to add dimension. As an added touch, I printed out a "present" and glued it to the inside left each card. It's a great cartridge to have on had when you need a card in a pinch!

Holiday Gifts

A lovely time was had by all who attending "Holiday Shopping with Leesburg Momprenuers" showcase last night! It was so nice to get together with old friends and new ones and support women in business, especially during these difficult economic times that our nation is facing. Thank you, Margaret, for creating such a festive atmosphere and supporting us all by arranging this wonderful event.

I created the items pictured to sell at the event. They make really great teacher, hairdresser, mailperson, UPS person, daycare provider, bank teller, newspaper delivery person, friend, etc. gifts. Everything in the picture contains CHOCOLATE! The little shopping bags have scallop decorated peppermint patties in them. The tins contain festively decorated chocolate nuggets. The "Homemade Christmas Fudge" poem contains a very large Hershey Bar. And of course the cute snowman mug contains a hot cocoa package, marshmallows, and a candy cane. These were fun to make and I was happy to be able to provide them as handmade gifts to purchase at reasonable prices. Don't you just love when you receive a handmade gift or card? Honestly, it doesn't matter who makes it, just that they person thought enough about you in the moment to get it for you. That's how I feel about it anyhow.

I just bought some fabulous stamps...so look for new cards to be posted tomorrow!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I put these cards together using cardstock from Club Scrap, flowers from Prima, Happy Thanksgiving stamp from Hero Arts, and Copper Stickles by Ranger in the center of the flowers.

My intention was to create these over the weekend so that I could put them in the mail in time for them to arrive for Thanksgiving, but that did not happen, so these will not be sent this year. Amazing! Would you believe I already have my Thanksgiving cards ready for next year?! It's all about perspective -- when life gives you lemons...make lemonade!

It's hard to believe that it is Thanksgiving time already and that Christmas and Hanukkah are right around the corner. Time sure does seem to fly by faster the older I get...there just don't seem to be enough hours in the day. I need to remind myself to set aside time to do some things that bring me joy. Even if that joy is sitting peacefully and giving that "to do list" in my mind time to relax and take a break.

Heartfelt Thanks

My heartfelt thanks goes out to my dear friend Margaret who has so graciously taken on supporting "Mompreneurs" this holiday season. She is doing this, not only by shopping locally, but by coordinating a Holiday Shopping event on December 4th in Leesburg.

I must say, I was both surprised and delighted when she asked me to be a vendor. Surprised because I only recently started talking to my darling husband about my starting a crafting business, in addition to my Virtual Assistant business (Top-Notch Virtual Assistance). And delighted because as soon as I threw the business idea out into the universe, I received an email from Margaret asking me if I wanted to participate! I'm just going to take it as a sign and extend my heartfelt thanks to Margaret for giving me a nudge to get out there even before I have my Business Plan created. Anyone who knows me, knows that it is unusual for me to do anything without a well laid out plan -- especially start a business. Thanks, Margaret, for helping me step out of my comfort zone and into new territory. So exciting!

Snowflake Card

Baby, It's cold outside! We had a few flurries this morning and I am beginning to think it's marshmallow roasting time. It's time to celebrate the winter season. This snowflake card was made using Pearl Ex Powders.

I love this time of year. Although we get busy with all of the running around for the holidays, we also take time to reflect and be thankful. It's the time of year that we reach out to friends and family and let them know that we are thinking about them.

One of my favorite things about this time of the year is receiving cards. For many of us, it's the only time of year we correspond with some people. But mostly, I enjoy making cards to send. And I get ecstatic when I receive a handmade card in the mail -- it doesn't even matter if the sender made it...there's just something about them that warms my heart. Please don't misunderstand me, I very much enjoy receiving store bought cards, too. Heck, I'm just happy when someone thinks about me and my family enough to send us their warm wishes during the very busy season. Thankful, indeed.

I have not designed the cards that I will be sending out this year for Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's. How about you? I know, it's not even Thanksgiving yet, so we still have time. I'll post a picture of my Thanksgiving cards this year, after they have been sent out.

The Great Escape

Happy Veteran's Day.

I put this cute mini album together at the crop this past weekend. The kit that I used is called The Great Escape Luggage Tag Album and can be purchased from The Button Factory. The kit contains all of the elements and instructions to put the album together. I just added photos and a few Italy embellishments to complement the photos. Angela and her team at The Button Factory were vendors at the Great American Scrapbook Convention. Need I say, it was love at first sight?! During the class I teach the basics of the Cricut electronic cutter, as well as discuss a variety of techniques that can be used to enhance your cards and really make them "pop!"

Yesterday I attended Crops Plus last crop of 2008. As always, it was a fabulous crop filled with very creative women. If you have not attended a Crops Plus crop, you definitely want to sign up for one of their upcoming crops soon (March 2009 is very close to selling out).

At Crops Plus "It's All About You!" from the moment that you arrive until your goodbye hugs on the way out. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. I have made some great friends at crops throughout the years. Sarah and Deej create a wonderful environment filled with top-notch vendors, excellent classes, and fun make-and-takes.

WOW! America has decided that it is definitely a time for a change. I feel confident that President-Elect Obama will find a way to bring everyone together, after what was an unprecedented campaign. I have a lot of friends on both sides of the fence and look forward to a day when this political "fence" will also be knocked down. "Yes We Can."

I made this card for a 4th of July party and thought it would be fitting to post it on this historic night. We witnessed the largest voter turnout in our nation's history. The world was watching our democracy in action -- my sister even called me from Australia when the results were announced!

About this card, all of the stamps used are from Stampin Up. The shooting stars and swirls were stamped using VersaMark, sprinkled with clear embossing powder, and then heated with a heat embossing tool. I used Stampin' Up Write Markers to ink the stamp and stamped the image onto glossy paper.

Halloween Treat Bag

On Halloween, I created this little treat bag for the ladies at my son's afterschool program. I made it using the Cricut Tags, Bags, Boxes & More cartridge. The double-sided Heidi Grace paper was purchased at our new JoAnn Fabric and Craft store in Leesburg, VA. It's a fabulous store! If you're ever in the area, you must check it out. And I am not just saying that because I teach papercrafting classes (scrapbooking, cards, stamping, etc.) there.

The bags were created using my Cricut Expression. I selected and put the setting on 6". I used my Stampin' Up Scallop Punch to create the tag and stamped a black cat from a retired Stampin' Up set. All elements were inked with VersaMagic Dew Drop Chalk Ink - Pumpkin Spice. If you want to get two treat bags out of one piece of 12" x 12" paper, use the 5 1/2" setting.

Welcome

This is my first post, so please bear with me. My dear friend Kim will be happy to see that I finally posted something to my blog (thanks, Kim, for your encouragement). I decided to start this blog because so many people that I have met during crops, classes, or just talking about scrapbooking, stamping, paper crafting, etc., have asked me if I had a blog and I was always embarrassed to say that I did not.

But more importantly, I want to have a way to keep in touch with the wonderful people that I have the pleasure of meeting through my love of paper and other crafting. As well, I am hoping that this will be a great way to meet and get inspired by new "cyber" friends. My goal is to create a place where I can share things that I learn and discover, and hopefully, you'll do the same with me!

This is just the beginning, so be sure to check back often!
